To create a blurred background in the cover image for my article “ The best games for the iPhone“, I drew three shapes, dragged the respective images into Affinity Photo and dropped them onto the respective shape in the layer list – done. One function that surprised me due to how intuitively it works in Affinity Photo is crop masks. Similarly, Photoshop can now recognise objects in images and select them quite accurately – also with the help of AI.Īffinity Photo can’t do that either, here you still have to select everything manually, even though the magic wand and the selection brush do a solid job even without AI. For example, some time ago Adobe added an AI-supported function that can completely replace the sky in landscape photos, which Affinity Photo does not have. Affinity Photo even has a counterpart to the content-based filling of Photoshop, but here it is called “Inpainting”.ĭifferences to Photoshop only become apparent with AI-related functions. If you are interested in image editing and composing, the software offers almost the same functions as Photoshop: various layer types, (live) filters, adjustments (tonal value correction, contrast, etc.), effects (shadows, glows, etc.), masks, color gradients, brushes and much more – Affinity Photo will not fail to provide the basic functions. The number of tools that Affinity Photo offers is also quite impressive. If budget is a concern, GIMP is a free and open-source photo editing software that is capable of delivering powerful results, although beginners should expect a steeper learning curve to master its tools. The toolbar is strongly reminiscent of Photoshop, even though some of the icons are different. Photographers who don’t require the range of graphic design tools found in Photoshop and Affinity Photo can consider Luminar Neo, which is pricier than Affinity Photo but offers a streamlined photo editing experience.Īlternatively, Adobe Lightroom is a great option for RAW editing that can be subscribed to at a lower cost than the full Photoshop suite for editing RAW images. Users who are happy with Photoshop’s subscription model and want to access their full suite of software will benefit from Lightroom’s inclusion of image management tools that are lacking in Affinity Photo. The obvious direct competitor to Affinity Photo is Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Photoshop Elements, with Serif positioning their product as a more affordable alternative. HDR effects with the Tone Mapping Persona If you need to distort or warp images, a dedicated Liquify Persona can be used to achieve a variety of effects, from pinch and twirl to adding turbulence or creating a mesh clone. These masks can also be combined into compound masking techniques for even more control over how you edit and manipulate your photographs for the best results.įor more complex tasks where users require the option to check between different aesthetics, layer states make it simple to alternate between different compositions and effects in a single click. Serif has also included several new mask tools such as the band-pass mask which complement the hue and luminosity range masks for more precise masking of landscapes and other photographs. If you have a passing familiarity with basic image editing software, you’ll grasp the Photo Persona in a short space of time and quickly achieve the results you’re looking for. Pretty much any manipulation techniques you can perform in Adobe’s flagship software are replicated here, including various selection and brush tools and a broad variety of filters. Affinity Photo 2 includes all the photo editing tools found in PhotoshopĪffinity Photo 2 continues the trend of matching many of the common features found in Photoshop across its editing tools, which can be accessed in the Photo Persona interface.
